More site changes

Monday Nov 14 2005

I took some time today to update the site a little bit. I wanted to make the site a bit more accessible and compliant.

  • Changed the doctype from xhtml to html 4.01 strict
  • Changed the menu to use more descriptive markup
  • Removed some of the extra/uneeded CSS
  • Added validation links to the footer
  • Moved most of the site over to using proper dynamic font sizes kinda sorta as per Owen Briggs
  • Changed the link stylings as per David Baron

All in all I'm pleased with it. It was alot of work but it should be worth it. Let me know if it ends up breaking stuff

Website Renovated (again?!)

Sunday Jun 12 2005

Yes, again! PHP sucks, so this is going back to Perl. Bigger and stronger than the last Perl implementation, this will likely be the last update before it's rewritten in Java.

It's interesting how much your code changes after a year or so and you learn more about the technologies you work with. The last Perl version didn't use a database at all, this one uses MySQL. The last one used CSS, but didn't use selectors much at all. The last Perl version was 1 procedural CGI (it was Q+D anyways), this one is several OO modules. I'm using Template Toolkit for this version, which seems to help things stay much, much cleaner. Here's how the code size breaks down:

  • 115 lines of Perl CGI
  • 1463 lines of Perl support modules
  • 135 lines of Template Toolkit/HTML
  • 150 lines of CSS

All in all I'm pretty proud of this edition, I think alot of progress has been made since my last rewrite of this. I'm interested in seeing how the benchmark will compare with the Java version. Guess that has to be written first though huh?

Website renovated!

Monday Oct 4 2004

Well it's been a long time coming. I finally got around to renovating this site. It used to run on a 75 line perl CGI that displayed content from text files. Now it runs on PHP and MySQL. Yay! I've joined the masses! Yet another PHP/MySQL page, yet another CMS. I am more excited about the CSS in this actually. The old site was a touch horrid, but this should be much cleaner. Please feel free to send me your comments.

I hope to be adding features to the site soon, but most of the features I'll be adding will be on the admin side so none of you will be able to see it. The exception to that will be the journals. I want to add alerting, comments, and some way of navigating them instead of having them all on one page with 150 entries.

I have also added all of Sekoni's old journal entries from orilonise.domynoes.net, so those are viewable as well. Ugh. Talk about horrible HTML. Who uses center tags anymore, huh? Movable Type, of course!

We got married!

Thursday Feb 26 2004

We got married on Febuary 7 of this year. Just a little wedding, nothing huge. We decided we had waited long enough so we threw the entire thing together in a week and did it at the courthouse. We zoomed over to Bed Bath and Beyond, Rich's-Macy's and Target and set up gift registries. All our family flew down to see it happen, which was really great. Thank you everyone who came! We put the photos up in our gallery a little while back. You can either browse there from the navigation bar on the left or go here.
